The More You Look, The Dumber It Gets

A few follow up points, inspired by readers, from yesterday's piece about Rep. Joe Sweeney's bizarre - and remarkably inaccurate - comments.

Good afternoon! Yesterday’s piece, “BREAKING: Elected Official Says Something Incredibly Dumb,” got a lot of traction, including a number of comments and emails from readers with follow up questions and thoughts about everything from the appropriate use of the state’s Right to Know laws, to how many of those 177 undergraduate international students in the entire public university system are athletes. I address a number of those issues in this 8-minute video. A few other notes:

1) Substack had a systemwide problem late yesterday morning, right as I sent out yesterday’s piece, so many of you who get this via email (as compared to the Substack app) may not have received it. If you didn’t get a chance to read it yet, please do - because Rep. Sweeney and the NHGOP are trying to make hay on this issue. They are suggesting that in-state applicants are getting rejected because international students are taking their slots. This couldn’t be more inaccurate, and it is hard not to conclude that part of this is to graft the immigration issue onto funding for public higher education. There’s plenty of homework I’ve done to prepare this piece, so that some of you can share this information. Please give it a read, and share it.

2) If you haven’t already, please consider becoming a Substack subscriber - and especially a paid subscriber. If you click on the story, you’ll have the opportunity to do so - it is only $8/month, or $80/year. It is a big part of what makes this work possible.

3) If you haven’t yet, sign up today for the “Rebuild & Rise” 2025 Summit at Bedford High School on Saturday, June 14th. Registration is $75 for the full day of programming, where we’ll have lots of practical breakout sessions and interactive presentations to get Democrats prepared for 2026 and beyond with data, communications and political insight, and real work on values-driven, emotionally-resonant language and strategies. If you register by May 15th, you’ll get the $40 Early Bird rate for the day! And best of all, if you become an annual paid subscriber to my Substack, you will get free registration to the Summit! Registrations have been brisk - I hope you’ll consider joining us.
