I’ve known Maura for more than eight years - we became friends while we were both running for major office in 2018. (I was running for Governor; she was running for Congress.) In this episode, I wanted to use the luxury of a long-form, casual conversation to learn more about Maura’s upbringing, what she was like in high school and college, and what were key “sliding door” moments that could’ve gone different ways…but ended up fundamentally impacting the trajectory of her life.
I learned a lot in this conversation. We got into the nitty-gritty of some critical public policy areas (affordability, health care, the country’s widening wealth gap, and obviously the War in Iran), but I think you’ll most enjoy learning about her early days as a Marine. (For example, listen to where she was in life on the morning of September 11th, 2001 - it’s pretty crazy.) Listening to Maura talk about being a three-sport athlete in high school revealed something to me about how she defines leadership and teamwork.
